This past February, André Rosa, a Senior Scientist at µOrganoLab, was graciously invited to be a keynote speaker at The 3Rs Framework for Intelligent Use of In Vitro, In Vivo, and NAMs. This conference took place at the NOVA Medical School in Lisbon with an emphasis on the connection of the advances of in vitro modeling with the current efforts of refinement in in vivo modeling, highlighting how complementary approaches are shaping the future of translational research.

André gave an informative keynote on our newly published Lymphoid-Tissue-on-Chip and our other immunocompetent models titled, „Immunocompetent Organ-on-Chip Models to Assess Safety and Efficacy of New Drug Modalities“.

Among its many interesting talks, one highlight of this conference was the entrepreneurial spirit shared by Sofia Viana, from the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Coimbra, Portugal, with the development of an innovative oral dosing solution, titled „HaPILLness“, designed to replace invasive administration methods in animal studies. It is important to bring ethical innovations in animal studies into the 3R conversation. Through bridging advances in in vitro NAMs with ethical advancements in in vivo modeling, the 3R pillars of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement can fully be addressed.

This conference generated an engaging discussion around the global future of NAMs, with a specific lens on the Portuguese research and industry landscape. It concluded by opening the door to what the future of NAMs could hold with a thought-provoking roundtable on how AI can influence and reshape the 3R framework.

We were grateful to be invited to this interesting conference. It will be interesting to see how in vitro and in vivo researchers can work together to achieve the 3R Pillars and how new technological innovations will shape the future of the field of NAMs!
