At the end of June, the BaCell 3D Conference in Basel, Switzerland, once again showcased innovative approaches to integrating well-established organoid cultures with complex microphysiological systems (MPS), helping translate scientific discoveries into clinical applications. A key challenge remains to recapitulate highly dynamic multicellular interactions and the systemic nature of human diseases using accurate, scalable, and predictive tissue models. Working intensively on that topic, Isisdoris contributed with her poster “Engineering Human Adipose Innervation Using iPSC-Derived Sympathetic Neurons-on-Chip” to this discussion.
In this work, she is developing a human MPS to study neuro-adipose interactions by combining iPSC-derived sympathetic neurons with a full-complexity Adipose-on-Chip model.
The conference provided an excellent opportunity to gain new insights into increasing the complexity in our own systems while meeting the regulatory requirements for drug discovery. Isisdoris especially enjoyed exchanging ideas with experts from academia and industry who are developing impressive 3D models, as well as connecting with colleagues who showed genuine interest in our work.
Basel itself was the perfect setting to reflect on many inspiring impressions during an evening stroll along the Rhine river.
Isisdoris returned with valuable new perspectives and useful connections. We look forward to building on these insights as the project moves forward.
