From 26th– 29th of August 2025, Basel opened the gates for the first edition of the EMBO Workshop on Adaptive Immunity in Barrier Tissues. Organized by Carolyn King and Mauro Gaya and funded by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), leading experts from all over the world gathered in Basel for 4 days full of inspiring presentations and fruitful discussions. The scientific talks covered immune interactions in a plethora of barrier sites found within the human body, including the lung, gut, intestine, bladder, and many more. A highlight was the very engaging poster session, in which constructive exchange with many scientists working on tissue immunity could be realized. The MicroOrganoLab could contribute with a poster presentation, in which Adrian presented our cervix-on-chip platform, utilized for host-pathogen interactions in HSV-2 infection.
The scientific program was rounded off by a great intercultural culinary event at the Sandoase right on the border triangle, where Germany, Switzerland, and France meet.
We are very grateful for the opportunity to attend this event and are very excited to follow how NAMs will contribute to the field in the future!
