Meeting, where leading experts in Organ-on-Chip (OoC) technology from around the globe gathered. The event, held in the dynamic city of Milan, offered a unique platform for researchers, industry professionals, and regulators to exchange knowledge and discuss the latest innovations in the field.

A standout moment was without a doubt the social event at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci, one of Milan’s most prestigious venues. The evening provided a memorable atmosphere for attendees to enjoy live music, excellent food, and meaningful networking opportunities in a truly extraordinary setting.

At the Politecnico di Milano, the conference fostered an engaging environment for thought-provoking discussions and creative ideas. Our µOrganoLab team proudly presented our latest research, participated in dynamic discussions, and networked with renowned scientists, gaining valuable insights and sharing expertise.

µOrganoLab Contributions
In the morning, prior to the official start of the conference, our 3R-Center Tübingen team organized and contributed to the „EUROoCS Academy„, while µOrganoLab members contributed to the conference with two oral presentations, eight posters, and an expert panelist role in a roundtable discussion.

EUROoCS Academy
Co-organized by the 3R-Center Tübingen and the EUROoCS’s “Teaching & Training” working group, Silke and Peter, along with four other esteemed experts from across Europe, delivered insightful lectures. These covered the entire organ-on-chip (OoC) system workflow, from the foundational scientific idea to MPS fabrication and regulatory requirements.

Oral Presentations and Panel Discussion
During the „Immune System“ session, Claudia presented the latest advancements in the lymphoid tissue-on-chip project, a sophisticated platform designed to assess T cell-dependent antibody responses and vaccine efficacy.

Adrian participated in the “Infection/Vaccines” session, where he showcased recent results from our uterine cervix-on-chip platform, which is instrumental in studying cervical cancer and infection.

In a career-focused roundtable, Peter, along with other panelists, provided valuable insights into professional opportunities in the growing organ-on-chip field.

Poster presentations
Julia presented custom-designed chips to evaluate CAR-T-cell-based cancer immunotherapy efficacy in vitro. This system, which includes various tumor models and vasculature-like perfusion, facilitates the study of immune-tumor interactions and offers a robust platform for preclinical cancer immunotherapy research. Her outstanding poster earned her the Best Poster Award for Senior Scientists – way to go Julia!

Fulya showcased a novel electrophysiological MPS with integrated microelectrodes for monitoring neurosphere electrophysiology.

Madalena introduced a multi-organ-chip system combining white adipose tissue and liver models, enabling the study of metabolic communication between these two organs.

Silke’s poster emphasized the importance of training the next generation of organ-on-chip researchers, highlighting the critical need to invest in both development and education the of innovative models.

Svenja represented our retina team, presenting a groundbreaking approach to modelling age-related macular degeneration by integrating biological membranes into OoC systems.

Mona shared insights into our advanced microphysiological pancreas-on-chip platform, a promising tool supporting 3D pancreatic islet tissue culture and providing opportunities for diabetes modeling.

Nicole presented her microfluidic tumor-on-chip platform, which models tumor-immune cell interactions and facilitates exploration of patient-specific immunotherapies.

Last but certainly not least, Lisa-Marie introduced a novel iPSC-derived 3D neurophysiological system with the potential to induce neuroinflammation, offering exciting possibilities.

We are eager to continue our collaboration with EUROoCS and are already looking forward to the next event. The joint EUROoCS Annual Conference and MPS World Summit, set to take place in Brussels from June 9-13, 2025, promises to be another milestone in advancing OoC technology. We look forward to building on the momentum from Milan and contributing even more to this cutting-edge field!

Mark your calendars—we hope to see you in Brussels next year!
