In the breathtaking landscapes of Sibratsgfäll, Austria, the µOrganoLab team embarked on an unforgettable adventure during this year’s Science Retreat. Surrounded by the majestic Austrian Alps, our team engaged in profound reflections on our past accomplishments in the realm of #OrganOnChip projects, celebrating milestones, learning from our challenges, and brainstorming innovative ideas for the year ahead.

Reflecting on the Past, Equipping for the Future

Over the course of 2.5 days, we found ourselves in a serene change of scenery. We didn’t merely look back on our past achievements, but also on the hurdles we’ve overcome. The team was divided into several engaging sessions, including Lab Organization, Immune Cell Integration, Microfluidics & Analysis, Endothelia Cells, Microscopy & Imaging, Microfabrication Techniques, Hydrogels & Scaffolds, each focusing on recapitulating major findings in their respective areas of research. But it wasn’t just about summarizing our past endeavors; it was about sharing knowledge, educating one another on specific methods, devices, and concepts. We also dedicated time to reflect on the technologies and devices available at our lab sites at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tübingen and the NMI Natural and Medical Sciences Institute in Reutlingen. We brainstormed new ways to leverage these resources, propelling our Organ-on-Chip research forward.

Becoming Inspired – Insights from Our Special Guest

This year, we had the honor of hosting Prof. Stefan Liebau as our special guest. Stefan is a renewed expert on Neuroanatomy also from the University of Tübingen. His expertise and suggestions breathed fresh life into our discussions, inspiring the group to think outside the box and provided us with a fresh perspective and motivated us to collaborate in more creative and effective ways.

Finding Our Balance – Switching between Work and Adventure

Amidst the intensive work sessions, we made sure to relish the stunning nature of the Austrian Alps. We explored trails, conquered nearby peaks, and forged unforgettable memories. These adventures not only brought us closer together but also enhanced our teamwork and strengthened our team spirit. We discovered the beauty of balance between work and fun.

Heading Back Home with a Bright Future Ahead

As we left the retreat, our team was highly motivated and brimming with energy. The 2.5 days spent in Austria gave us a nice boost, instilling a commitment to teamwork and a drive to uncover groundbreaking discoveries. Our dedication to pushing the boundaries of Organ-on-Chip research and making science more human-centered is stronger than ever.

Here’s to scaling new heights together! Stay tuned for more exciting updates!
